Why Self Knowledge Is Every Founder’s Advantage
“Know thyself”, it’s a phrase I use often with founders. I didn’t realize it was attributed to Socrates until I tossed it into Google. What can I say, I live under a rock sometimes.
The entrepreneurial world is saturated with messages about always levelling up. Do more. Scale faster. Never get comfortable. It’s an easy sell because it’s rooted in dissatisfaction, in the idea that there’s something wrong, something missing, and somewhere else you need to be.
That messaging works because it preys on people who don’t have a deeply rooted sense of self. And that makes my inner advocate scream.
Many founders ask me some version of this:
“Should I want to level up my business? Because I’m feeling pretty comfortable right now.”
It’s a beautiful question. And it’s not my job to answer it. It’s my job to help you explore it in a way that serves you. To separate what’s true for you from what the world tells you should be true.
There’s complexity here that quick-fix growth advice can’t touch. When coaching is done well, I’m not pushing you to do more. I’m helping you see more. To recognize the patterns, assumptions, and identities that drive how you lead and live.
And learning to know ourselves isn’t just a mental process. It’s somatic.
It lives in the body.
The body tells the truth long before the mind does.
When you really start listening to your body, you can feel the difference between authentic alignment and performance. Between being calm because you’re grounded and being calm because you’re suppressing something. Between true regulation and compliance.
As Ailey Jolie says, “True nervous system regulation creates more capacity for your authentic self to emerge. It supports your ability to feel deeply, to maintain boundaries, to access your voice when it’s needed, and to respond from integrity rather than survival.”
That, to me, is the essence of knowing thyself.
